Cottage pie
Beef mince in a simple gravy is baked under creamy, cheese-topped mash.

Gather
Ingredients
- 800 gpotatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 30 gbutter
- 75 mlmilk
- 500 gbeef mince
- 1onion, finely chopped
- 2carrots, finely diced
- 1 tbspplain flour
- 1 tbsptomato purée
- 300 mlbeef stock
- 1 tspdried thyme
- 50 gmature Cheddar, grated
- salt and black pepper, to taste

Method
- 1.
Heat the oven to 200°C, or 180°C fan. Cover the potatoes with water in a saucepan, bring to the boil and simmer for 15–20 minutes until tender.
20 minutes - 2.
Meanwhile, brown the beef in a large frying pan, breaking up any lumps. Add the onion and carrots and cook until starting to soften.
12 minutes - 3.
Stir in the flour and tomato purée. Add the stock and thyme, then simmer for 15 minutes until thickened. Season to taste.
15 minutes - 4.
Drain the potatoes and mash with the butter and milk. Season lightly.
3 minutes - 5.
Transfer the beef mixture to a roughly 2-litre ovenproof dish. Cover with mash and scatter over the Cheddar.

Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden on top and bubbling around the edges.
